Activities of the CUD in society


Among the many objectives of the CUD (Centro Universitario de la Defensa) is its desire to maintain a dialogue with society by communicating its mission and contributing to the development of Spanish society, and in particular for the benefit of the people of Aragon.

At the same time, through these activities, the CUD also hopes to help promote the role of defence and security in our society.

The careful editing Jekyll & Jill of this tale by the brothers Grimm,  illustrated by Alejandra Acosta and translated by Jessica Aliaga  Lavrijsen, combines classical and modern conceptions of graphic arts"

Jekyll & Jill Editores, who will receive the award from the DGA for  the second consecutive year, has been co-founded by Jessica Aliaga  Lavrijsen, teacher at the CUD.

The Centro Universitario de la Defensa de Zaragoza (CUD Zaragoza) takes part in the 7th International Workshop on Satellite Constellation and Formation Flying

The Centro Universitario de la Defensa de Zaragoza (CUD Zaragoza) is taking part in the 7th International Workshop on Satellite Constellation and Formation Flying (IWSCFF) in Lisbon (Portugal) with a paper presenting a new constellation of satellites. The work has been put together by Daniel Casanova from the Department of Applied Maths at the University of Zaragoza and senior lecturers from the CUD Dr Martín Avendaño and Dr Eva Tresaco. Daniel Casanova is a PhD student and the work presented is basically his thesis, supervised by CUD Director Dr Antonio Elipe and Dr Avendaño. See complete news bulletin.

The Educational Secretary of the CUD, Col. Pablo Díaz-Santos, takes part in the 6th Advanced Programme in Human Resource Management.

On 15 March 2013, the Educational Secretary took part in the VI Curso Superior de Gestión de Recursos Humanos (6th Advanced Programme in Human Resource Management) at the Academia de Logística (Logistics School) in Calatayud (Zaragoza), with a talk entitled "The Centro Universitario de la Defensa located within the grounds of the Academia General Militar in Zaragoza".

Mr Rogelio Cuairán, Manager of the CUD, takes part in the 2nd Seminar on companies, employment and disabilities.

On 14 March 2013, the Manager of the CUD took part in the II Seminario sobre empresa, empleo y discapacidad (2nd Seminar on companies, employment and disabilities), held in the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Zaragoza. Mr Cuairán formed part of a round table, where he was able to explain the CUD’s involvement with the “Proyecto Más Capaces" (Enhanced Abilities Project) in conjunction with the ADECCO Foundation and the Association of Economists of Aragon.

The CUD Deputy Director, Dr Jorge Rosell Martínez receives the Order of Military Merit, Silver Cross with White Distinction

On 20 February, a holiday at the CUD and the anniversary of the AGM, Dr Jorge Rosell Martínez was decoratedwith the Order of Military Merit, Silver Cross with White Distinction, by the Army Chief of Staff General Jaime Domínguez Buj.

One of the articles published by Dr Sergio G. Rodrigo in the New Journal of Physics was chosen to form part of the Highlights of 2012 collection. Another article by the same lecturer made the cover of the October issue of ACSNano, a journal of enormous impact in that field.

XVIII Cross Olimpico-Gran Premio CUD (CUD Grand Prize)

The “18th CUD-Olimpo cross-country Grand Prize” was held on 3 February 2013 in Zaragoza. The event, which is included in the regional sports calendar, was sponsored and organised by the Club Atlético Olimpo.

This is the second time the CUD has sponsored this event, which is included in the races for the Aragon and School Cross-country Trophies.

CUD lecturer, Dr Fernando de León and the Nanophotonics Group of the Instituto de Ciencias de Materiales de Aragón (Materials Science Institute of Aragon).

CUD lecturer Dr Fernando de León is a member of the group of scientists from the Instituto de Ciencias Materiales  (University of Zaragoza) and  CSIC, which does research on graphene.

CUD lecturer Dr Silvia Vilariño participates in the organisation of various scientific activities at the Faculty of Science, University of Zaragoza.

CUD lecturer Dr Silvia Vilariño is to participate in the organisation of the "15th Winter Meeting on Geometry, Mechanics and Control Theory", which is to be held on 30 and 31 January 2013 in the Faculty of Science at the University of Zaragoza. She is also one of the organisers of the Thematic Day on "Dirac structures and applications", which will also be held at the Faculty of Science (University of Zaragoza), on 1 February 2013. These activities are organised in collaboration with staff from the Faculty.

CUD lecturers Dr Javier Martínez Torres and Dr Miguel Ángel Urbitzondo develop an explosive detection system based on nanotechnology.

CUD lecturers Dr Javier Martínez Torres and Dr Miguel Ángel Urbitzondo are working with their research groups together with Colonel Rafael Jiménez from the International Demining Centre, on the development of an explosive detection system based on nanotechnology.

CUD lecturers Dr Jorge Pastor and Dr Joaquín Sancho in the 6th Conference on Excellence in University Management.

Senior lecturers Dr Jorge Pastor and Dr Joaquín Sancho read their paper "Análisis de la posible implantación de un modelo de excelencia EFQM, en el Centro Universitario de la Defensa de Zaragoza, para el diagnóstico y evaluación de la calidad de la titulación del grado de Ingeniería en Organización Industrial" (Analysis of the potential implementation of an EFQM excellence model at the CUD, Zaragoza, for diagnosis and quality assessment of the Engineering Management Degree) at the 6th Conference on Excellence in University Management organised by the Universitat Jaume I and held in Castellón on 29 and 30 November 2012.

CUD manager at the 5th National Public Sector Audit Conference.

CUD Manager, Rogelio Cuairán, read his paper "Informe sistemático económico-financiero para universidades públicas" (Report on the economic/financial system for state universities) in the session on Benchmarks, Costs and Fees in the provision of services at the 5th National Public Sector Audit Conference, held in Madrid on 22 and 23 November 2012.

A doctoral thesis supervised at the CUD awarded the research prize by the Real Academia de Doctores de España (Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain).

Dr Pedro Sánchez Sellero,senior lecturer at the University of Zaragoza, received the research award for the best doctoral thesis in the area of Law and Economics on 17 October 2012. The title of his research is "Efectos de la inversión extranjera directa sobre la productividad en el sector manufacturero español" (Direct foreign investment effects on the productivity of the Spanish manufacturing sector). The thesis was supervised by Dr Jorge Rosell (deputy director of the CUD) and Prof. José Manuel García Vázquez (Vice-Rector of Economics, University of Vigo). The award ceremony took place in the Plenary Hall at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports in the annual opening ceremony of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain.

The CUD participates in the project “More Capable”

On 16 October 2012 the project “More Capable” was presented at the Association of Economists of Aragon. This is the second year that the CUD is participating in the project, which is sponsored by the ADECCO Foundation and the Association of Economists for the purpose of facilitating the social and occupational integration of those people with a disability amounting to 33% or more. This project involves taking the training course “Administrative support in the workplace”. The collaboration of the CUD allows students to do an internship at the CUD.
A través de esta formación, se pretende conseguir el contacto directo de los beneficiarios con el ambiente laboral real para que puedan conocer la organización y el sistema de relaciones laborales del Centro a fin de facilitar su futura inserción profesional.

The goal of this particular training course is to expose the students to the real work environment so that they can get to know the organisation and system of work relations at the CUD making it easier for them to enter the job market.

El CUD firma un convenio con la fundación ARAID

This agreement will enable those researchers that have been contracted through the ARAID Foundation to be associated with the CUD. The first researchers to take advantage of this procedure are Dr Julia Herrero, Dr Javier Martín and Dr José Olmo.

The agreement was signed on 15 October 2012 on the premises of the CUD by the directors of both institutions, CUD director Prof.Antonio Elipe and the director of ARAID, Ms Mª Teresa Gálvez.

CUD lecturer Jessica Aliaga takes part in Researchers’ Night

During the evening of 28 September, a huge variety of activities were offered to see the work of Aragonese researchers first hand. This is a European project called Researchers in Real Life, which is conducted with the aim of showing the general public the work of researchers, both within and outside their own field of research. The Open Day takes place annually throughout Europe, with the simultaneous participation of around 250 other European cities.

CUD lecturer Dr Miguel Escudero at the course entitled “Retos para la mejora de la calidad del aire" given by the UIMP (Menéndez Pelayo International University) in Huesca.

Within the framework of activities offered by the UIMP on its campus in the Pyrenees, Dr Miguel Escudero acted as secretary and organised the course entitled "Retos para la mejora de la calidad del aire" (Challenges in Improving Air Quality), together with Dr Xavier Querol,  researcher at the CSIC (the Spanish Council for Scientific Research). The course took place in the town of Huesca from 19 to 21 September and was sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment along with funding from the LIFE+ programme through the AIRUSE project. Appointment of Lecturer Javier del Valle

CUD lecturer, Dr Javier del Valle has been appointed representative of the Universities of Aragon on the Scientific Committee of UNESCO’s MaB programme in Spain. The decision was taken in July 2012 by the MaB Committee itself.

Excellent reviews for the work of Lola Gracia from the CUD Library.

The film "Cosetas d'adentro",  by Lola Gracia, which is the first short film to be made in the Aragonese language, has received excellent reviews, as has the story it is based on, by the same author, which received an award in the "Condau de Ribagorza" stories and poems competition in 2009. Professor in Film Studies Agustín Sánchez Vidal expressed his opinion in an article in the local newspaper Heraldo de Aragón on 15 July 2012.

The CUD Manager participates in the study entitled "Educación financiera y espíritu emprendedor de los jóvenes en Aragón”.

The study entitled “Educación financiera y espíritu emprendedor de los jóvenes en Aragón” (Finance Education and Youth Entrepreneurship in Aragon) was presented by the Education Committee of the Association of Economists of Aragon on 10 July 2012.

The aim of the project is to assess the economic culture among the young people of Aragon from two angles: from the perspective of finance education and from the point of view of entrepreneurial spirit.

The 13th Edition of the Celestial Mechanics Conference at the CUD

On 18 and 19 June the CUD hosts the 13th Edition of the Celestial Mechanics Conference in Zaragoza. The conference is attended by most Spanish researchers, along with several international guests working on Celestial Mechanics and Astrodynamics. For further information, please visit the website.

The Deputy Director of the CUD directs a study on the impact of international flight paths

The report was presented to the press on 28 May. The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Business Administration at the University of Zaragoza under the direction of Dr Jorge Rosell, Deputy Director of the CUD. The title of the report is An Approach: the Socio-economic Impact of Air Connections in Aragon and the Metropolitan Area of Zaragoza with other European Cities.

Dr Etelvina Javierre, a senior lecturer at the CUD, in the 2012 Summer Courses.

Among the University of Zaragoza courses on offer this summer, Dr Etelvina Javierre, together with Dr Peña from EINA, will be participating in the Sciences and New Technologies block with the course entitled Biomechanics: Biomechanics: Linking Engineering and Biomedical Science (La Biomecánica. Puentes entre la ingeniería y  las ciencias biomédicas). The course will be given in the city of Jaca from 9 to 11 July. More

Jekyll & Jill, a small publishing house, one of whose founders is CUD Senior Lecturer Dr Jessica Aliaga, receives the prize awarded by the DGA for the best book published in Aragon in 2011.

Un día me esperaba a mí mismo by Miguel Ángel Ortiz Albero is the first book published by Jekyll & Jill. Dr Jessica Aliaga Lavrijsen is a Senior Lecturer in English at the CUD as well as being a publisher and translator.

Showing of the film "Cosetas d'adentro" by CUD Assistant Librarian Lola Gracia

On 26 April 2012 at the Joaquín Roncal Cultural Centre, the short entitled "Cosetas d'adentro", was shown as part of the 19th Aragonese Language Workshop (XIX Jornadas de Lenguas de Aragón). This is the first short in the Aragonese language and was created by Lola Gracia. It was filmed in the Ribagorza region and includes a large cast of actors and extras from the area. The story on which the script was based received an award in the 2009 "Condau de Ribagorza" Short Story and Poetry Contest.

Meeting of the CUD-Zaragoza Board of Trustees, chaired by Under-Secretary of Defence, Irene Domínguez-Alcahud.

On 29 March 2012, the CUD’s Board of Trustees held an ordinary session. On this occasion the Under-Secretary of Defence chaired the meeting. The Under-Secretary visited the AGM and the CUD, and signed her name in the CUD’s Book of Honour.

La formación en competencias informacionales en los estudios de grado. El ejemplo de la Universidad de Zaragoza.

This is the title of the book published by Mira Editores, co-authored by CUD Librarian Dr Javier Vidal together with other experts from the University of Zaragoza. The book was presented by the Deputy Rector for innovation and quality, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and the Chief Librarian at the University of Zaragoza on 12 March 2012 at the Maria Moliner Library Conference Hall at the University of Zaragoza.

Publication of the book entitled El otro McCoy translated by a Senior Lecturer at the CUD.

Dr Jessica Aliaga Lavrijsen, Senior Lecturer in English at the CUD is the translator of this book, which was written by Brian McCabe and published by Jekyll&Jill Editores.

The CUD Director, Professor Antonio Elipe, is appointed Honorary Cadet of the Academia General Militar

On 20 February 2012, coinciding with the 130th anniversary of the Academia General Militar, and on the same date that the CUD celebrates its patron saint’s day, Professor Antonio Elipe was appointed Honorary Cadet of the Academia General Militar. This is a tribute to all those who have shown outstanding service and love for the AGM. In his speech, the Commandant of the Military

Academy said that Professor Elipe was doing an extraordinary job in implementing the integrated training of future military officers and civil guards.

Sponsorship of the CUD Cross-country Grand Prize

On 5 February 2012, the CUD held its Cross-country Grand Prize. This is a race which has become a fixture on the sports calendar in Aragon. Organised by the Club Olimpo, it has various categories of event, such as the Aragonese Championship or the University   Championship. This edition was sponsored by the CUD.

  

Participation in the book Prácticas y modelos innovadores para la mejora y calidad de la docencia (Practice and Innovation Models for Improvement in Teaching)

The CUD librarian, Dr Javier Vidal Bordes, has participated in one of the chapters in the book Prácticas y modelos innovadores para la mejora y calidad de la docencia, edited by Prensas Universitarias de Zaragoza, as part of the collectioninnova.unizar. This book also contains contributions from the following members of the CUD teaching staff: Dr Joaquín Mur, Dr Concha Orna, Dr Mª Victoria Sebastián, Jorge Sierra and Dr José Mª Yebra Pertusa

The publication has come about as the result of the Jornadas de Innovación e Investigación Educativa (Research in Education and Innovation Workshops), which provide a permanent forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences in the area of teaching innovation at the University of Zaragoza.

CUD – CIRCE partnership agreement

On 19 December 2011, the Centro Universitario de la Defensa (CUD) signed a partnership agreement with the CIRCE (Centre of Research for Energy Resources and Consumption) to foster cooperation between the two institutions and help promote common avenues of research within the field of energy. The CUD Director Antonio Elipe and CUD Manager Rogelio Cuairán were both present at the meeting, which took place yesterday with Antonio Valero and Andrés Llombart, (the Director and CEO at CIRCE respectively) at the CIRCE offices on the Río Ebro Campus (University of Zaragoza).

The CIRCE is a foundation that was established in 1993 by the University of Zaragoza, the Regional Government of Aragon and the ENDESA Group. At present partners also include the SAMCA Group, TAIM-WESER and TUROL Energía.

Science outreach activities.

On Friday, December 16, the Aragonese phase of the 48th Mathematical Olympiad and the Mathematical Talent Workshop take place at the Science Faculty of the University of Zaragoza, which are organised for local secondary and high school students. CUD Lecturer Antonio Oller is participating in both activities as a member of the assessment committee and as a speaker, respectively.

Activities of the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon (INA) research group, with a CUD senior lecturer among its members.


A team of researchers of the INA (Institute of Nanonocience of Aragón) has designed an "electronic nose" that detects gaseous traces from materials, such as TNT. Miguel Urbiztondo Phd, senior lecturer at the CUD, is actively participating in the project.

First annual conference of ‘El CUD en la sociedad'

Zaragoza, 11 May 2011.- The CUD (Centro Universitario de la Defensa de Zaragoza) holds its first conference under the banner “El CUD en la Sociedad” (the CUD in society), in the grounds of the Academia General Militar, where the CUD is located.The event was attended by Emilio Botín, Chairman of the Banco Santander, as the guest of honour.

This was the first of a cycle of annual conferences organised by the CUD to make itself known to society and to report on its mission and the progress being made.To this end, world leaders in economics, industry, academics, literature, etc will be invited to give lectures to our students and staff to further their understanding and offer CUD personnel the opportunity to share some time with leading representatives from our fields of study and from society in general.
On this occasion, Emilio Botín gave a lecture entitled “La estrategia de Banco Santander” (The Strategy of Banco Santander), and shared with the audience his experience as Head of Banco Santander, both past and present, ever since the 1980s when it was quite a small bank – ranking seventh largest in Spain.  Today, Banco Santander is the number one bank in the euro zone, and the tenth in the world by market value. It has ranked third in the world over the past four years for earnings.

CHCO group activities at the University of Zaragoza, with a senior lecturer from the CUD among its members

The CHCO group (a research team investigating Homogeneous Catalysis with Organometallic Compounds) investigates the preparation of new organometallic compounds aimed at developing catalysts.Dr Vincenzo Passarelli, a senior lecturer at the CUD, is one of the 14 members of the team.

The Educational Secretary of the CUD in Revista Ejército

The CUD Educational Secretary, Colonel of Artillery, Pablo Díaz Santos, has published an article entitled  El título de grado en Ingeniería de Organización Industrial (The Bachelor's Degree of Industrial Organization and  Management in Engineering) as part of a section in the magazine Revista Ejército devoted to the new system for training officers. The complete issue of the magazine will soon be made available in digital format. The article by the Educational Secretary frames the reform of the officer training programme within the context of the process of adaptation to the European Higher Education Area. It presents a detailed description of the degree and provides information about the structure and functioning of the CUD, located within the grounds of the Academia General Militar.

On April 13, 2011, CUD Professor, Dr. Jose Olmo, participates in the Seminar on Defense  and Economics of the AGM with a presentation entitled, Effects of Risk Aversion in Financial Markets in Defense Spending.

Dr.José Olmo participated in The XIII Seminar on Economy and Defense. This seminar is organized by the Department of Economics and Management of the Military Academy along with the Department of Economic History and Structure and Public Economics at the University of Zaragoza.

The Military Academy (AGM) presents the teaching staff at the CUD with a special flag.

Included among the activities held on 20 February, marking the anniversary of the AGM (General Military Academy) in Zaragoza, was the award of a special flag to each member of the teaching staff at the CUD, alongside the cadets and the Academy’s new instructors and other personnel. The flag was personally presented to CUD teaching staff by the Educational Secretary at the CUD, Pablo Diaz Santos.

 

Dr Eva Tresaco, a lecturer at the CUD, wins the mountain bike orienteering event held at the AGM as part of the celebrations for the AGM’s 129th Anniversary.

The competition took place in the Academy grounds and surrounding area. Dr Tresaco was presented with the prize by the Commandant of the Academy on 12 February.

Activities of the MARTE Research Team, University of Zaragoza, with a lecturer/researcher from the CUD among its membership.

The MARTE Research Team is involved in researching faster, safer and more environmentally-friendly techniques to analyse chemical samples in different environments. Members of this team include experts from various fields of science including Dr María Teresa Aramendia Marzo, one of the lecturers at the CUD.

Activities of the 13A Biomaterials Group (Grupo de Biomateriales del 13A), which includes a lecturer/researcher from the CUD as one of its members.

The Biomaterials group is part of the Instituto de Ingeniería de Aragón (Aragonese School of Engineering) and researches carbon polymorphic structures applied to bio-medicine. One of its members is Dr Francisco Javier Medel Rezusta, a lecturer at the CUD.

The Geometry Group of the University of Zaragoza, with three lecturers from the CUD among its membership.

The group was started in the Department of Geometry and Topology at the University of Zaragoza in the 1970s, and has evolved over the years to its current size with ten members, three of whom are lecturers at the CUD:  Dr Raquel Villacampa and Dr Miguel Angel Marco and lecturer Jorge Martín.

The Manager of the CUD presents the Spanish model of higher education in the field of Defence

The Manager of the CUD, Rogelio Cuairán, gave a talk entitled "Higher Education in the field of Defence: the Centres for Defence Studies" in Ecuador  within the framework of the 7th Seminar of the RAUI (Network of Administrators of Latin American Universities).  This Event took place  on the 11th, 12th  and 13th Octubre,  2010 in Guayaquil.

La RAUI (Red de Administradores de Universidades Iberoamericanas) is a strategic instrument; its main objective is to respond efficiently in the field of institutional responsibility, to the needs of professionalisation of higher education institutions by fomenting cooperation.  It was established in 2003 and its members include universities in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

The Director of the CUD gives a talk entitled “The Way to the Stars – The Stars along the Way” at the Astronomy Conference .

The Director of the CUD, Antonio Elipe, was invited to give a talk at the Congreso de Astronomía celebrado en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela  entitled "The Way of the Stars - The Stars of the Way". The conference took place from 9 to 11 October 2010 in the city of Santiago de Compostela.

The conference was funded by the University’s Ramón María Aller Astronomy Observatory.

The Deputy Director of the CUD leads a  estudio sobre la economía aragonesa.

The Deputy Director of the CUD, Jorge Rosell, leads a project entitled "The challenge of manufacturing diversification in the Aragonese economy”.  The project was presented on 9 September with the 2009 Annual Report of the Economic and Social Council of Aragon. The opening speech was given by Marcos Sanso Frago, Professor of Economic Analysis and Chair of the CESA Economy Committee.  The conference concluded with a talk by Professor Emilio Ontiveros and a round table discussion with representatives from business organisations and trade unions.  The event took place  in the Goya Hall of the Aljafería Palace.

A talk given by the Manager of the Centre in the official Master’s Degree in Accounting and Finance

On 29 June 2010, Rogelio Cuairán gave a talk entitled “Adapting to the environment as the key to success: Kilimanjaro and the Banking System”'. In the talk, the Manager of the CUD compared similarities between a personal adventure climbing Kilimanjaro and the biological mechanisms of the human body acting to adapt to changes occurring around it, with the transformation of a series of economic and financial indicators of the large Spanish banks during their process of adaptation to radical changes in their environment in recent years.

The talk took place within the framework of activities for the official Master's Degree in Accounting and Finance, offered at this department in the Faculty of Economic and Business Science in the University of Zaragoza and was presented by the coordinator of the Master’s Degree, Natividad Blasco.

Talk by the Director of the CUD in the series “Encounters with Science” within the framework of the Cultural Activities organised by El Corte Inglés.

'Clock, don’t tell us the time: the time and how we measure it” is the title of the talk given by Antonio Elipe, Professor of Applied Mathematics, at a series of “Encounters with Science” on 9 June 2010.

The series of talks is organised by the Professional Association of Physicists in Aragon and the Aragonese Section of the Royal  Spanish Society of Physicists, with the collaboration of the magazine ”Muy Interesante”, the Faculty of Science of the University of Zaragoza, the Cátedra de José María Savirón de Divulgación Científica (the José María Savirón Chair of Scientific Awareness) and the Foundation “Zaragoza Cuidad del Conocimiento” (Zaragoza City of Knowledge). The talk was presented by Infantry Lt. Col. José Manuel Vicente Gaspar, director of the Department of Weapons Systems at the AGM.

The Director of the CUD visits the Naval Postgraduate School

Last May, making the most of the fact that he was going to a conference in Monterrey, Antonio Elipe visited the facilities of the Naval Postgraduate School, a university institution specialising in Military postgraduate training in the USA.
